Film Critic

Keep up with movie news at my websites, MovieHouston.com and InsideMovies.net.

MovieHouston, as the name suggests, is focused on movie happenings and openings in the nation’s fourth largest city. Each day, I write about movies that are opening in Houston and about local movie-related events, and I frequently give away free tickets to advanced screenings, autographed movie posters and newly released DVDs.

MovieHouston should be your first choice for keeping up with Houston movie happenings.

InsideMovies.net takes a broader perspective on movies and on Hollywood. The site is filled with movie news and views, video features and movie photos.

I’ve written professionally about movies since 1998. I studied film as an undergraduate at the University of Texas, but I worked as a news reporter until I persuaded my editors at the Los Angeles Times in 1997 to allow me to switch to the entertainment staff. After taking a year off to study at the University of Michigan on a fellowship, I returned to create a beat on film creativity.

I spent two years as a backup film reviewer for the Times. My primary job during that time involved writing essays, profiles and feature stories about filmmakers and filmmaking. I visited film sets. I sat beside Anthony Minghella as he and Walter Murch worked on perfecting the sound for The Talented Mister Ripley. I spent hours in the homes of stars and directors such as Will Smith, Dustin Hoffman and Wes Craven, interviewing them for stories.

I left the Times in 2000 to return to my hometown, becoming chief film critic of the Houston Chronicle.

You’ll find a small sample of my film writing along with other work on the Selected Stories page of this website.
